• Rama Wrap Up

    May 25, 2011

The first ever Hama Hama Oyster Rama was fun, exhausting, at various times either hilarious or mellow, well-attended, delicious, and productive. We raised nearly $5,000 for the Hood Canal Education Foundation and had a great time doing it. [UPDATE: This was a guess, because we were waiting for the final number to come in… and we actually raised $6500.]

Visitors came from far and wide to tour the beach with Teri King from Washington Sea Grant, pose for a photograph with two cooperative Geoduck, relax in the beer garden, and eat some really fresh seafood.

Highlights of the event (in no particular order)

    > Local poet Todd Fredson of the McCreavy House in Union reading poetry written by 5th graders at Hood Canal School.

    > Free samples of Graybeard Jim’s delicious geoduck chowder

    > Rick Endicott of Long Live the Kings (with significant help from his partner-in-crime Joy Waltermire) winning the first heat of the Shuckathalon despite two pulled hamstrings.

    > All the Monterey Dorids and Sea Cucumbers that showed up just in time for the Sea Grant tours.

    > The cloudy, calm day that kept the glare  down in the shell-pile beer garden.

    > All the delicious drinks in the beer garden: FinnRiver Apple-Blueberry cider, Whidbey Island Winery’s Island White & Merlot, Upright Brewing’s Oyster Stout, and Grove Street’s Hefewiesen, Kolsch, and IPA.

    > Watching the tide roll in as the party wound down.

I thought about you all on Saturday! We had a fabulous, albeit exhausting time, and I bet you did, too! Next time we will be together for sure!

I think I’m still about 5 days behind on my sleep. Good thing we’re not headed into one of our busiest weekends of the year. Oh, wait…. But the Rama was super fun and I hope your party went well. Next year, for sure!
