Historic Hood Canal - Stump Ranch Edition

A look back at what life was like along the Canal through some old timer photographs we found at the Mason County Historical Society. If you know anything about these photos, please add comments!

Cabins in an old growth forest

This is one of the Finch family photos. It makes us think of Annie Dillard's novel The Living, about the early settler experience in the Pacific Northwest.

Wagon trail to Lake Cushman through the old growth forest

We don't actually know when this photo was taken, but we like to think that this horse and buggy is on its way to The Antlers, a lodge that was built on the shores of Lake Cushman in 1895. The hotel was flooded out when the hydroelectric dam, built in 1926, drastically increased the size of the lake.
