Also known as varnish, mahogany, or just plain old “purple clams,” these clams are gorgeous, plump, and juicy. Unless you find an albino clam, expect dramatic purple shells. Also be prepared for the occasional tiny (and delicious) pea crab.  (If you have a crab allergy, these are not the clams for you!)

Savory clams are meatier than our manila steamer clams and softer in texture... they're more like a mussel than a clam. Flavor wise, they're incredibly rich and satisfying - think of them as the proscuitto of the sea. They have thinner shells than manilas, meaning that, pound for pound, they feed more people. They flash open when exposed to heat, so if you like a fully-cooked clam, steam them for an additional minute or two once they open. Savories can be subbed into any steamed clam or mussel preparation, and they're fabulous in stews and chowders.

These 5 pound bags serve 5 to 6 people as a main dish or 8 to 10 people as an appetizer.

My Favorite Clams!

These are the best clams in the world. Did half in a Cataplana with Linguica, and the next night I did some in a traditional butter, garlic, white wine, saffron, and lemon. Saved just enough to make a New Haven style Clam Pizza!

Clams delish!

This was the first time we had ordered these, usually get the steamers. Decided to try because they were favorably prepared to the mussels! They were bigger and more tender than the steamers, we loved them and ate them all in butter, white wine, garlic sauce. Definitely a big step up from the little steamers! We will surely order them again. Shipped right on time and only one or two dead ones. Very fresh too!

Outstanding clams! Wow!

This was our first adventure into Purple Clams. I saw the PNW Clam Chowder recipe on the Hama Hama website and thought it would make a perfect opener for our thanksgiving meal. It was amazing and delicious! The Purple Clams were the perfect choice for this chowder. A Perfect texture and very forgiving for this rookie clam steamer!
I’m incredibly grateful for all of the Hints & tips with the recipe AND the ones on steaming clams located in another part of the website. I will definitely purchase these clams again.

These are our FAVORITE clams!

The shell is lighter weight than most West Coast clams and the clams are as large s the shell. The flavor is wonderful especially with my husband's clam broth. We usually have enough clams for two meals or more, steaming them and then making WONDERFUL clam chowdee. Thank you HAMA HAMA for the great fresh clams and great delivery time!
