Feb 20, 2012: "A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk / Along the briny beach"
Practically from the get-go, the year-old Walrus & Carpenter was hailed as one of Seattle's best restaurants. The New York Times has written about it twice (in the travel section and magazine). GQ and Bon Appetit both named it one of the 10 Best New Restaurants of 2011. Along with Boston's Island Creek Oyster Bar and New York's John Dory, the Walrus has been credited with making oysters hip again. It's the kind of place that people wait hours to get in to, and still love. Needless to say, we were psyched when folks from the Walrus took time...
Jan 27, 2012: Visit to Hog Island
Hello from California! We're on a long overdue trip to check out the oyster scene in San Francisco and meet up with our friends from the Hog Island Oyster Company. This morning we took a tour with farm manager Erik and his wife Brenna, in charge of marketing and communications for the company. Here are some observations from the road: 1. San Francisco is a truly beautiful city, varied and vibrant. We drove out of the city in the fog and found ourselves on a uninhabited, sunny coastline 20 minutes later. 2. Parking is way easier in Lilliwaup. Our most ridiculous...
Oct 12, 2011: ... in which we proclaim Hama Hama to be the official oyster company of St. Paul
So Adam and Oyster Fan took a trip last week to St Paul to attend the first ever Meritage Oyster Fest. We left a little early and stayed a little late, because it turned out that we had lots of fun things to do in Saint Paul. Before turning our attention to oysters, we met up with some relatives and took a boat ride on Lake Minnetonka, where our Great-Grandfather used to live, snuck in a visit with our awesome Great Aunt Rosanna, who just turned 97 and has a better memory than either of us, and did a little...
Sep 23, 2011: ... in which we travel 3,000 miles to stand on top of a pile of oyster shells
A few members of team Hama Hama traveled east last week to attend a wedding, eat lots of lobster, and generally enjoy life on the Maine coast. Naturally, any visit to any coastline would be incomplete without checking out the local oyster scene, so our trip included several stops of oyster interest. First, we had dinner at the fantastic Island Creek Oyster Bar, in Boston, which was packed on a weeknight with happy people celebrating with delicious seafood. Our favorite selections from the raw bar were the Island Creeks (Duxbury, MA) and Moon Shoals (Barnstable, ME), and we highly recommend...
July 22, 2011: Visit from the "Oyster King"
Wednesday we shared an oyster lunch with Billy Marinelli, a Long Island Marine Scientist turned shellfish mogul turned Bangkok restaurateur and all around oyster expert. Billy is touring West Coast oyster farms with his wife and Rosie, a Bangkok chef. It was a beautifully calm day on the oyster farm and during our meal the tide, with the crew just behind it, headed out for the afternoon. Adam barbecued some Blue Pools in the picnic area and served them with melted butter, and they were (in my humble opinion) hands-down the best barbecued oysters ever. Now, that might be because...
